President’s Message
February 2011
Another year has come and gone, and as I write this communication, we already
find ourselves in February. This past year was one of many challenges. Despite
the daily issues that we encounter, there was a lack of work that caused a
Voluntary-Reduction in Force. Thirty of our members were affected by the RIF.
There were enough volunteers to offset any involuntary reductions, therefore
saving many of our newer members. While we are grateful for our negotiated
Employee Security & Protection Plan which made this possible, we are still
concerned by the loss of experience in specific areas. That is why it is so
important for us to be aware of our Job Descriptions and Duties. We have no
desire to see anyone lose their jobs, but it is imperative that we discourage
Non-Bargaining Unit employees from continually performing our work. This is
neither cost effective nor efficient.
Scholarship applications will be available online and at the union office in the
second week of February. Applications must be received by March 31, with no
exceptions. Applicants should be sure to answer all questions. Our committee
will review the applications, and scholarships should be awarded in April. Our
annual scholarship fundraiser will once again be a golf outing at Compass Pointe
on Saturday, June 4. If you know of a business that would like to sponsor a hole
at our golf outing, please contact us. The contact information is on our flier
which is also posted on our website.
New Constitution & By-Law books have been distributed along with new Key Sheet
cards. If you have not received yours, please contact your Plant Representative.
I would like to thank all of our committees for their efforts this past year.
I would like to thank all of our union representatives for their willingness to
serve our union. Attendance at our union meetings continues to be good, but each
representative should set aside that small amount of time each month that it
takes to fulfill their obligation to those that they represent. Our meetings
serve as a forum to learn about current events that concern our members, and as
a tool for our representatives to share information with others. All members are
welcome on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm. Please stop by to see our
hall, and to meet other S.E.A. members.
Unfortunately, our local Benefits Representative Peggy Dunn has retired. Peggy
was our savior when it came to dealing with all benefits issues, and our Benefit
Center. The S.E.A. wishes Peggy well in her retirement. I have voiced my
concerns to Human Resources about the absence of a local contact to address our
issues at the Baltimore location. I have been told that there will be a contact
to address our questions, but to date there has been no replacement. Human
Resources also understand the huge void that Peggy has left.
I am looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead, and I am also looking
forward to meeting those of you that I have not had an opportunity to meet yet.
Have a great 2011!
Fraternally,
Dennis B. Wilderson Sr.
